Victor H. L. Wyatt Elementary and Middle School, situated in the lively St. Vital neighbourhood of Winnipeg, Manitoba, recently embarked on an exciting journey to revitalize their aging playground. Faced with a booming student population and a play area in need of an update, the City of Winnipeg and the school administration teamed up with Parkworks experts to create a dynamic community hub where students and locals alike can come together to rediscover the joys of outdoor play and community connection.

In early 2022 the outdated play structure was swapped out with an array of colourful new equipment from Jambette and KOMPAN resulting in a large, functionally linked play area designed to accommodate a high-capacity of playful adventurers. In the fall of 2022, the transformation was complete. The revitalized playground at Victor H. L. Wyatt School is a shining example of what teamwork can achieve, offering a vibrant outdoor space where imaginations can truly run wild.

The Challenge

This bustling prairie city is home to many active families, so safe and inclusive play spaces are key to bringing everyone together in a fun and exciting way. Victor H. L. Wyatt School faced the challenge of an outdated and unsafe playground that just couldn’t keep up with its growing student population. The priority was clear: replace the old structure with an engaging, high-capacity play area that could meet the needs of an increasing number of students and families in the community. The new playground equipment had to support a variety of activities, making sure every child could join in on the fun and enjoy a safe playground.

The Solution

Render of the project: A playground with a play structure, slides, and ground level play equipment, surrounded by greenery.

With a pressing need for an expert solution, the City of Winnipeg and the Victor H. L. Wyatt School administration issued a tender to commence this project. Parkworks submitted a thorough proposal highlighting custom solutions rich in play opportunities, inclusive features, top-notch safety measures, and community benefits. Renderings showcasing playground features, such as an exhilarating play structure with a triple-slide attached by Jambette and KOMPAN favourites like the Home Seesaw and Triple Somersault Bars, painted a vivid picture of just how awesome this dynamic and engaging play space could be. The visuals provided a comprehensive vision of what Parkworks could offer to this lively school community. As a result, Parkworks was awarded the opportunity to redevelop the Victor H. L. Wyatt School playground.

The Parkworks team didn’t waste any time creating a unique solution to the community’s needs, resulting in a large, interconnected play structure full of gross motor activities such as climbing, sliding, and balancing. This was combined with high-capacity and inclusive ground-level springing and spinning play elements. Collaboration between skilled landscape architects and designers from the City of Winnipeg, along with the expertise of various subcontractors, ensured the project's success at every stage.

The Implementation

Throughout the installation phase, Parkworks' Project Management team was frequently on site to ensure a seamless install.

Completed in the fall of 2022, Victor H. L. Wyatt School playground was transformed into a vibrant play adventure for the whole community to take part in and enjoy. Children are having a blast exploring every aspect of the playground, leaving no element untouched. Inclusive and accessible, the play structure accommodates many children at once, offering a variety of activities for all ages and abilities. There are more challenging features for older playground enthusiasts and more age-appropriate activities for little ones to engage with.

Jambette

With a high-capacity play area being top priority, a custom Jamette play structure was created for the space. The absolute star of the show is the thrilling triple-slide attached to the side of the structure, designed for maximum fun.

Featuring multiple climbing, swinging, balancing, and sliding points, this structure is equipped with colourful activities that keep kids entertained for hours on end. With a total of four slides—yes, that's right, FOUR slides—this playground is not to be missed. Complimenting this extradentary play structure is the Jambette XYRÄ-45 classic spinner and panel station, offering creative outdoor sound discovery and play. Both are situated at ground level, adding dynamic fun for everyone.

  • KOMPAN

KOMPAN playground favourites were incorporated around the play structure base to add extra excitement at ground level for parkgoers. The wildly popular Home Seesaw, jam-packed with high-capacity play value, makes for the perfect addition to any park space. Additionally, the Triple Somersault Bars introduce a comfortable yet exciting hanging element to the play space, making them ideal for beginners before they advance to the more daring suspended components of the larger structure.
